Thechoreography and music built an intense backdrop to an assassination attempt. Though I'm not a fan of the pop ballad songs during the romantic scenes, I love the instrumental soundtrack for this show. That song during the last scene of episode 3 was devastatingly gorgeous. Hae-Soo continues to be precious and awesome.

Ongoing 35/39 Annalisse29 people found this review helpful Story Acting/Cast Music Rewatch Value This review may contain spoilers Let me start by saying that I LOVED the 1st season of Scarlet Heart. I had recently come around to watching period dramas and was recommended that I watch it. And boy was I not disappointed...I wish the same could be said of this second season. Let me begin with the obvious season 2 is set in modern day, so the feel is completely different as are the problems all of the characters face. The beginning started somewhat strong for me. There were flashbacks to season 1 and a few of the characters' reincarnated selves in modern day was a nice touch. story the plot was weak sauce. Nothing we drama fans haven't seen before love triangle, poor girl catching the eye of the rich heirs and deciding who she truly loves. The revenge plots did keep me interested with just how far the characters will go for 'justice' and the truths behind long-kept family secrets. But the doppelganger storyline wasn't needed AT ALL. Plus, after the first few episodes, there isn't a whole lot of interaction between the main couple Zhang Xiao & Yin Zheng until episode 15, and even then the build up felt too rushed. Maybe because I couldn't really get a sense of time passing, or how much time passed from one problem popping up to another being resolved. cast the actors did what they could with the script they were given. And after watching the whole drama I know why more actors from the first season didn't sign on for the 2nd. From episode 1 to the finale the main actress was ALWAYS crying or on the verge of tears. It got to the point that her tears meant nothing to me as a viewer because she cried SOOOO much. music It didn't move me, and it wasn't memorable. But it served its purposed to give dramatic flair when needed. Rewatch Dear God NO! Knowing how it all came together and ended, I'd rather just rewatch the first season and pretend that potential SPOILER ALERT for season 1 Ruoxi chases after 4th Prince in the museum with a smile on her face and a sense of hope. Honestly, had the 1st season ended on that note I wouldn't have bothered with the 2nd. Overall I'm harsh on this BECAUSE the 1st season was so good. In comparison, season 2 is a 5, but as a standalone I'd give it a solid So in fairness, the actual 7 i'm giving this is more than it deserves - Read More Was this review helpful to you?

By William Schwartz Published on 2016/08/30 The pacing in "Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo" really is top notch. While I still psychologically recognize the obvious discordance between the political powerplay scenes and Soo's vastly more simplistic interpretation of plot, the tones are quite well balanced. We go from one to the other without any real sense of whiplash. Prince So is an uncommunicative jerk with his brothers, and he's also an uncommunicative jerk with Soo. But in both cases Prince So is also the main guy who's all about getting things done even if it means his hands get dirty in the process. AdvertisementOne aspect of the Goryeo royal family here that distinguishes it a lot from the Joseon royal families more commonly seen in Korean dramas is the sheer level of backbiting competition. The royal princes all love each other, yet at the same time they seem to take disproportionate glee when someone else fails. Even assassination attempts don't seem to phase them on a personal level. It's like they're trying to win at a game. This is one way that Soo's apparent role as the center of her own hot man harem feels oddly justified. Soo is just another symbolic goal for all these manly men. They want her because they don't have her. And as is the case with all of the other power struggles, physically dominating Soo is sort of besides the point. Simply being the strongest man in the room isn't good enough. You have to be the smartest one, too. It is through this context that the production team is able to rather fantastically build up the ritual which makes up the climax. What's especially great about this scene is that even without all the political context all the performers extras included are treating this one hundred percent seriously just as people back then would have. The choreography is so excellent and engaging it's a legitimate surprise when the knives come out even though we were practically told explicitly in advance that there was going to be an interruption. Narratively, the ritual also fulfills the important role of bringing Soo into the lives of the royal princes through a more convincing plot device than having her be around at the right place and right time to give a stern lecture. While this, too, is an convenient scriptwriting coincidence, the more permanent implications are quite interesting. How will a woman who wears her heart on her sleeve function in an environment where every personal interaction has multiple layers? Review by William Schwartz "Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo" is directed by Kim Kyoo-tae, written by Jo Yoon-yeong and features Lee Joon-gi, Lee Ji-eun, Kang Ha-neul, Hong Jong-hyun, Nam Joo-hyuk, Baekhyun and Ji Soo.
